He appeared in a body… was taken up in glory. 1 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)
Some people say that this was a part of an early Christian hymn. Clearly, it is a celebration of Jesus Christ for us to enjoy!
Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory (3:16).
-
- Jesus appeared in a body. Jesus knows life as you know it. He worked in a carpenter’s shop and had calluses on his hands. He worked long days and knew what it was to be exhausted. Jesus knew pain in that body. He knew joy in that body too. He ate, feasted, and made friends. He knew the joy of accomplishment when his friends succeeded in their mission, and he knew the pain of disappointment when after so long with him they still did not understand.
- Jesus was taken up in glory. This happened in the ascension. Jesus carried our humanity into heaven—this body that was nailed and speared and crucified—was raised to life, and Jesus ascended into heaven. That means that there is a man in heaven. At the right hand of the Father there is a man, and he is there for us. He came here to us. And he has gone there for us.
