Make friends with meek people
“Make no friendship with a man given to anger… lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare” (Prov. 22:24-25). If a person is habitually angry or complaining, he is not the friend for you. Rather, cultivate closeness with people who will help you to be more like Jesus.
Take pleasure in the joys of others
“Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Rom. 12:15). Spurgeon said, “The meek spirited man is glad to know that other people are happy, and their happiness is his happiness.” Meekness is glad for others who have more, and sorry for those who have less.
Discern God’s hand
“Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” (John 18:11). Jesus discerned the hand of God even in the work of His enemies. He could have blamed Judas or Pilate for the cup, but instead He says it was “the cup that the Father has given.” As long as you see your life as the story of what others have done to you, you will live in disappointment, anger, and resentment.
Walk daily in fellowship with Jesus Christ
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart” (Matt. 11:29). The yoke joined two animals so they could share the load of pulling the plow. Since none of us have meekness by nature, we need to bind ourselves to Jesus and walk with Him.
Anticipate all that God has promised
When God adopted you, He also placed you in His will. You have an inheritance that can never perish, kept in heaven for you (1 Pet. 1:4). God will create a new heaven and new earth and He will give it to the meek. “The meek… shall inherit the earth.” You will not possess the world by the strength of an armed rebellion, but by being meek.
