The seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop… Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Luke 8:15, 18 (NIV)

Here are two practical things that will help make your time sitting under the preaching of God’s Word more productive.

Bring your own Bible to church
Do not bring just any old Bible. Don’t bring the smallest Bible you can find. Bring your Bible. Have one Bible that you get to know and use at church. It will help you to discover what’s in your Bible.

Bring a pen and a paper to church
Write down what the Holy Spirit is teaching you. When you go to an important meeting with your boss, you take a pen and paper. Why? Because you know that there will be things you need to follow through on. You don’t want to mess up.

If that’s your disposition when you are listening to the words of a man or woman to whom you are accountable, how much more should that be your disposition when you are listening to the Word of God?
