One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4
At its heart, worship is the gaze of a soul on Jesus Christ. David knew what it was to come to worship and for his soul to catch a glimpse of the greatness and glory of the Lord.
But David also knows that he can’t live on occasional experiences like that. He longs to live in such a way that he constantly has the beauty, the holiness, and the awesome power of the Lord in view. That is why the worship of heaven will be so rich—because there you will have a clear and uninterrupted view of Jesus. David longs for glimpses of this now.
In worship we are seeking a fresh glimpse of Jesus. Why? Because this is how faith is sustained and renewed. We have come from the pressures of the week. We have felt the wind, seen the waves, and we come to direct our gaze on the Savior.
When you see Jesus clearly, faith is renewed. So when you sing a hymn on Sunday morning, the point is to get a glimpse of Jesus. The point of listening to a sermon is to get a fresh view of Jesus. The point of the Sunday offering is that it reminds you of the self-giving of Jesus, and how he has provided for you. When you pray together, you are affirming that whatever your greatest needs are, they are not beyond his ability and power. True worship brings Christ into view.
