Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. Genesis 39:4

Now let’s look at this story through the eyes of Potiphar. If he could speak to us today about Joseph, he might say something like this:

The first time I saw him, he was pretty messed up. I could see he was strong, so I took a chance on him. I started him out in the fields, but before long, I said to my wife, “Everything I ask him to do, he gets done, and then he asks for more. Let’s bring him into the house.”

What he didn’t know, he found a way to learn, and whatever he did, he always did well. And when something important needed to get done, it was my instinct to give it to Joseph.

One day, I told him I felt I could trust him. When I asked him why, he told me about his God.

“What’s so special about your God?” I asked. He told me how God appeared to his great-grandfather, Abraham, and promised to bless all nations through him.

“Potiphar, that would include you!” he said.

He told me about his father, Jacob, who had been a liar. I asked, “How did someone as honest as you come from a father as twisted as Jacob?”

“That’s the grace of God,” he said. So I reminded him about his brothers who had beat him up and put him in a pit. He simply said, “One day, God’s grace will come to them, too.”

As a businessman, I figured if God is blessing Joseph, maybe that blessing can come to me, too. “I’ll put Joseph in charge of everything I have,” I thought.

So I told him, “Use all that I have however you think best. I trust you with my household.” The blessing of God came to me because of him. Joseph was the best thing that ever happened to me.
