In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. Luke 1:39-40

So here are two women, and both of them have extraordinary news to share with one another.

After all these years, Elizabeth was expecting a child. What would Mary think of Elizabeth’s news? But Mary has news of her own to share, and her story would shine more brightly by far.

Elizabeth had conceived in the usual way. God had blessed her union with Zechariah and caused them to have a child in their old age. But Mary was a virgin. Jesus Christ was not conceived in the usual way. His life was not drawn from any human father. God was taking human form in the life conceived in the womb of Mary.

An angel had said, “that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Mat. 1:20). God the Son took human nature from a young woman, who became a mother through the creative power of the Holy Spirit working directly within her. Nothing like this had ever happened before, and nothing like it has ever happened since.

Reflect on the uniqueness of Jesus. The more you think about the miracle of the incarnation, the more staggering it gets. Knowing that you will never fully “figure out” the incarnation, will you let it lead you into worship today?
