The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV)

If you’ve never asked yourself, “What in the world is going on inside of me?” at some point in your life you probably will. Our hearts and souls are often a mystery to us. Here are just a few things that can go on in your soul:

Your soul can come under attack
Peter talks about sinful desires that war against your soul (1 Pet. 2:11), and the book of Proverbs talks about the need to guard your soul (Prov. 22:5).

Your soul can get bitter
Hannah was bitter because she had no children (1 Sam. 1:10), Job went through something similar (Job 10:1, 27:2), and Lot’s soul was tormented by the people around him (2 Pet. 2:8). David tells us about a time when his soul refused to be comforted (Psa. 77:2).

Your soul can be revived
David says that the Lord restores his soul (Psa. 23:3), and that the law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul (Psa. 19:7). Jesus said: “Take my yoke upon you…and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29).

Your soul can be filled with joy
When the angel announced Christ’s birth, Mary’s response was, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47). Your soul is the seat of praise: “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name” (Psa. 103:1).

Get ready for a journey to the interior of our lives to look at the secret life of the soul.
