Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink… Matthew 14:29-30
Peter’s attention has been focused on Jesus. He has been watching Jesus walk toward him. He has been listening to the command of Jesus, inviting him to “Come.” He has been stepping out of the boat in a risky initiative of obedient faith.
Peter has been walking by faith in the Son of God. But now we are told that when he saw the wind he was afraid, and that is precisely when he began to sink.
Notice what was happening: As long as Peter’s attention was focused on Christ. As long as Peter has the ability, and the power, and the command of Jesus firmly fixed in his mind, his faith prevailed. But the moment his mind began to fill with the strength of the wind, the height of the waves, and the difficulty and danger of what Christ was calling him to do, he began to sink.
Were you following Jesus in some risky venture, and then you took your eyes off of him? What happened?
