“The Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” Deuteronomy 8:14
These people had never actually been to Egypt. The generation that had—their parents—all died (except for Joshua and Caleb). These people were born in the desert, and they never experienced slavery.
But they might have, if God had not intervened. So when Moses says to them, “the Lord brought you out of the land of Egypt,” it prompts us to think about what our lives might have been if it had not been for the grace and mercy of God.
Here is a good place to begin. This is something that you have never experienced, because the Son of God loves you and gave himself for you. He stood under the wrath of God, so that you would never know what that is like. He experienced everything that hell is on the cross, so that you would never experience it for yourself.
Remember what you have been saved from. Think about what you will never experience because of the grace and mercy that are poured out for you in Jesus Christ, and you will have a spirit of thanksgiving.
Reflect on what your life might have been, if not for the grace and mercy of God.
