The heart is the command and control center of life. Here are three Bible verses that speak about the importance of the heart.
1. Your heart directs your life
Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life (Prov. 4:23).
You have a responsibility for the state of your own heart. If your heart is cold or distracted, there are reasons for it. God calls you to keep your heart and to guard your heart, and here’s why: The whole direction of your life will spring from where your heart is.
2. The heart is a mystery
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? (Jer. 17:9).
Paul talks about this in Romans 7: “I do not understand myself! What I want to do and be is one thing, what I actually do is something else. I’m a mystery to myself, a mass of contradictions.”
3. The heart is sinful
“For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander” (Mat. 15:19).
John White, a Christian psychologist, writes: “Many child-rearing theories assume that children come into the world as clean slates for their parents to write on. If parents write what they ought to write, they will produce well-adjusted, outgoing, morally upright and self-reliant children.” That’s what many child-rearing theories say. But the Bible says something very different. Children come into the world with sin already scrawled on the slate.
Where might you be underestimating the importance of your heart?
