Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40:28

It is possible to have a distorted image of God and not be aware of it. Here are some symptoms of a distorted view of God:

If you find God dull, boring, or generally unattractive, then you have a distorted picture of God. The disciples found Jesus so compelling that when he said, “Follow me,” they immediately left everything. If you think God is boring, you do not know the God of the Bible.

When God promised that he would give a child to Abraham and Sarah in their old age, Sarah laughed. She had her own picture of what God could do, and she found the promise of God ridiculous. Maybe you face that same struggle when you hear that God loves you or that he will walk you through this trial. There is a deep cynicism in you that wants to laugh.

Maybe you know someone who once professed faith in Christ. But now they would say to you, “I hate God, and I hate everything that you stand for.” Where do you go from there? Ask him (or her) to tell you about the God he hates.

Are you struggling with one or more of these symptoms right now? If so, can you admit to God that you may have a distorted image of him?
