“He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. He gave you manna to eat in the desert, something your fathers had never known.…” Deuteronomy 8:15-16

When you see the symptoms of forgetting the Lord, you can be sure you are dealing with a defective memory.

When you are sick, the doctor writes out a prescription and says, “Take this three times a day for four weeks.”

You won’t be better instantly. It will take time for what has been lacking to build up in your body. But if you take the prescription regularly you will begin to notice some change. The symptoms will gradually diminish, and eventually, the condition itself will be healed.

Now what is the prescription for a case of defective memory? It begins with cultivating a thankful heart. Think of what God has done for you. Choose to call it to mind. Look back and reflect on the goodness of God.

Reflection will have a humbling effect on your soul. See how God has given you life and preserved your life. God has given you gifts and talents, blessed you with freedom, and prospered you.

Don’t spend your time looking at what God has done for someone else. Look at what he has done for you. Choose to bring that to mind.

If you can see the thousand things that God has done for you, then when the one thing that you cannot understand does happen, you will have an entirely different perspective from the person who has never cultivated the art of thanksgiving.

Will you take some time to do this right now? Make a list. Spend 10 minutes reflecting on the goodness of God in your life and give him thanks.
