Let us…draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 (ASV)
When God has given a clear promise that is for all people, you can pray with great assurance. The Bible is full of such promises. It is like a field filled with buried treasure, and prayer digs up the promises of God. Imagine owning a field that is full of buried treasure and never digging. That’s what it is like if we don’t pray.
God has said, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18, KJV). When you come to ask for forgiveness, you don’t need to say, “Lord, if it’s your will, please forgive my sins.” He has already told you what His will is! Christ has come. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ invites you. Christ’s blood is shed for you.
God has said, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” (Luke 11:13, NIV). When you come to ask God for the strength, power, and presence of the Holy Spirit in your life, you don’t need to say, “Father, if it is your will, please give me your Holy Spirit.” He has already told you what His will is.
The promises of God open the door to faith that prays with great assurance and boldness. This is how faith operates in prayer; prayer takes God at His word.
