Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they quickly brought him out of the pit. Genesis 41:14
On a throne sits a troubled king trying to figure out what to do next. He feels the relentless pressure of overwhelming responsibility. The pundits stand around him, pouring over the mysteries of life and the disturbing prospects of the king’s dream. Everyone is anxious and nobody knows what to do.
God’s name is not mentioned even once in the royal court. There isn’t anyone in the whole palace who knows God. No one is walking with God. Then Joseph arrives. When Joseph is called from the prison, everything changes. He begins to speak on behalf of God: “God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer” and “God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do” and “The thing is fixed by God, and God will shortly bring it about” (41:16, 25, 32).
Pharaoh recognizes something is different about Joseph, so he says to everyone, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” (41:38). It’s not long before Pharaoh himself is talking about God. He says to Joseph, “God has shown you all this” (41:39). In other words, “Here is a man who knows God!”
See how wonderfully Joseph points us to Jesus here. When Jesus comes into the world, He says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). Jesus is the wise and wonderful counselor who comes to you in the mysteries of your life. He comes when you are pressed down by the burdens of your responsibilities. He comes to you when you don’t know what to do or where to turn. And He says, “Come to me.”
How could you respond to Jesus’ invitation today?
