Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God…?” 2 Samuel 7:18

Throughout the Bible, we have some marvelous examples of people who knew how to pray. And here we have a prayer of David that is loaded with wisdom and practical help on how to pray.

We begin in 2 Samuel 7:18 with the first word—Then. Then! When? After God had spoken. God had given a marvelous promise through the prophet Nathan (7:4-17), and then David prayed.

“Then King David went in and sat before the Lord” (7:18). He sat. He stopped what he was doing. He took time to think and reflect. He slowed down, and then he prayed.

Prayer is a response to the Word of God. It is a response to what God has said—so let him speak to you before you try to speak to him.

Read some verses from the Bible before you pray and use what you read as fuel for your prayer. When you start up a snow blower, you use the choke to get it going. Scripture is the choke that will get you going in prayer. Listening to what God says to you in his Word will help you to know what you should say to him.

Do you sometimes struggle with knowing how to pray? Listen to what God is saying to you in his Word as “fuel” for your prayers.
