I appeal [to you] as…a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed. 1 Peter 5:1 (NIV)
The best way to cultivate humility is to admire something greater than yourself. Gazing at the Grand Canyon or the Swiss Alps will help you to see yourself in proper perspective. But Peter has something better in mind: “The glory to be revealed.”
Thank God for every evidence of his grace in your life now. But remember, everything God has done in your life so far is only a small sample of what will be when Jesus Christ is revealed. You will share in His glory (Rom. 8:17). When you see Him, you will be like Him (1 John 3:2).
The words of John Newton’s well-known hymn, Amazing Grace, follows Peter’s familiar pattern. It begins by reminding us where we’ve come from:
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
And it ends by reminding us where we’re going:
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
Reflect on where you’re headed and take some time to thank God for his mercy to you (or ask him to pour his mercy into your life).
