Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. Isaiah 53:4

Think for a moment about the pain and disappointments of life. Some grief and sorrow is…

Physical. Everyone who lives with pain knows how miserable it is—osteoporosis, arthritis, migraines. Everyone who lives with sickness knows the sorrow of finding out you have cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s. We inflict physical suffering on one another—war, violence, abuse.

Emotional. Anyone who has been gripped by the power of fear or anxiety, or consumed with disappointment, knows grief and sorrow. Anyone who struggles with depression, or knows what it is to feel shame, knows grief and sorrow.

Personal. There are some griefs only you can know. You lose a loved one—a husband, wife, child, or treasured friend is taken from you, and no one else can fill the void they leave.

Social. We live in a world of lies, deception, hatred, and broken trust. If someone has lied to you, you know grief and sorrow. And who can measure the pain and sorrow of ruptured relationships?

Judicial. To be the victim of a crime is hard enough, but if the crime is never brought to justice, the pain is even greater. A person is wronged or falsely accused, and he cannot get justice. The world cries out, “How long do we have to wait before we get justice?”

Spiritual. If you know what it is to lose hope, you know grief and sorrow. And if you have felt that God is hiding His face from you, you know grief and sorrow.

The Bible speaks to the painful realities of life in this world—our griefs, and our sorrows. If you are walking sorrow’s path or if your heart is heavy with grief, this verse is for you. God knows your grief and sorrow, and He is drawing near to you, and speaking to you today.

Pour out your heart to God. Tell Him about your griefs and sorrows.
