The Lord watches over you… (Psalm 121:5, NIV)
Five times in this psalm we are told that the Lord watches over us.
- “He who watches over you will not slumber” (121:3).
God will never tire of you. God never loses interest in you and dozes off. He never says, “Oh, not her again!”
- “He who watches over Israel will neither slumber or sleep” (121:4).
God is never off duty. He never takes a break. He does not need someone to wake him up. There may be things in your life that you cannot understand, but you can be certain God knows about it and he is always at work.
- “The Lord watches over you—[he] is your shade at your right hand” (121:5).
He will give you strength for the pressures you face in the heat of the day. He will give you courage to face the fears and worries that come at night.
- “[The Lord] will watch over your life” (121:7).
Think of what this meant when Jesus went to Jerusalem. He experienced excruciating pain, entered into deepest darkness. He was crucified, died, and was buried. But on the third day, God raised him from the dead and today he is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. The ultimate outcome of everything that concerns you is in his hand.
- “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (121:8).
God is as interested in the ordinary events of your life as he is in your death and eternity. He watches over your coming and going. Every time your garage door opens, every time it closes, (and everything in between) God is watching. Your help is from the Lord.
What does this do for your confidence in the Lord?
