They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator. (Romans 1:25, NIV)
Idolatry takes a thing that is to be used and puts it in the place of the One who is to be worshipped. It could be a car, a house, or a career, sports, money, music, or success. All of these can become idols.
The way to dethrone idols is to ask what they are for.

Marriage: It is a wonderful gift from God. What is marriage for? Once you see that your marriage is a relationship in which you can glorify and serve God as partners, it will save you from making your marriage an idol.
Family: What is a family for? Children are a gift of God. They are trusted to parents as stewards, who are to raise them in the knowledge of God, and send them out to live for his glory. Once you see that this is what a family is, it will save you from making the family an idol.
Money: What is your money for? Your money is a good gift of God. It is a resource that God has entrusted to you, and he calls you to be a wise steward of how this resource can best be used for his glory. Once you see that, it will save you from making your money an idol.
Self: What am I here for? This is one of the most important questions you can ask. Are you a machine that exists for production? You are God’s special creation, made in his image, made for his glory. That’s why you can never fulfill your purpose if you live for yourself.
What idol(s) do you need to dethrone?
