“Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you.” John 12:35

As you hear the Word of God, perhaps you are putting off a response to Jesus. You are saying to yourself, “I’ll respond to God when I’m ready.” But right now you are resisting Christ and pushing Him away. You comfort yourself with the thought, “I can always become a Christian later.” How do you know that? You may not be able to. There are no guarantees.

The secret power of sin is at work in you. How do you know whether you will have the desire to come to Christ later on? This is why the Bible says repeatedly, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Heb. 4:7). Warren Wiersbe says, “The human heart becomes harder each time the sinner rejects God’s truth.”

Every time you hear the Word of God something happens in your soul. The Word of God that you are hearing today will make you softer or harder—it never leaves you the same. Every time you push Christ away, you add another layer to the hard shell of your resistance to Christ.

Sinners refuse to love the truth, and down the line “God sends them a strong delusion” (2 Thes. 2:11), and they can no longer see what they used to see. This is how God’s judgment works in this world. God gives sinners what they ask for, so change what you’re asking.

Are you asking God for more time to respond to Him? If so, then change what you’re asking. Ask Him to soften your heart so you can respond to Him today.
