Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Matthew 26:26 (NIV)

The most obvious thing about the Lord’s Supper is it is a supper, and people come to a supper in order to be fed. But when you come to this supper, you are given a wafer the size of a thumbnail. Any thinking person would ask the question: Where is the meal?

Christ fed his disciples by giving them bread, but then He said, “This is my body.” The body of Jesus Christ is the food that nourishes a Christian’s soul to eternal life. How does the body of Jesus feed God’s people?

Jesus took the bread and said, “This is my body.” It was in His body that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness and fulfilled everything that God requires. The bread speaks of His completed obedience. Our Christian lives, at their best, are a work in progress. We come to the table knowing that this has been another week in which we have fallen short of the glory of God.

But at the table, Christ says, “What you have not done for me, I have done for you.” Does it seem like your life is one massive pile of things left undone? Jesus comes to you at the table and He says, “It is finished.” God accepts you, not because you have finished your work, but because Jesus has finished His work.

How does hearing about Christ’s finished work at the table make you feel?
