To you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” 1 Peter 2:7 (NIV)
The builders have not yet seen the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. As far as the world is concerned, he is still in the dumpster.
But you believe that God has highly exalted Him. You believe that he is seated at the right hand of the Father. You believe that one day he will come again in power and glory. You believe that he is the Lamb of God, the Son of God, and the Savior of the world. You have put your whole hope and trust in him and that trust will not be disappointed.
That’s why Peter says, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (2:9).
The gathered communities of those who love Jesus are the only people in the world who can declare his praises. This task cannot be delegated. It is the purpose of God that in every locality there should be a visible community of believers who are born again by the power of the Spirit, pursuing a new life of holiness, and gathering together for worship, ministry, and service.
And where that happens God’s presence is known, God’s promise is fulfilled, and God’s praise is declared. The glory of the Lord Jesus Christ is the motivating passion for the life of the church. We are here to glorify God. Our purpose is not greater fulfillment. It is not to amuse or entertain ourselves. It is to glorify Him.
How is God’s presence known, his promise fulfilled, and his praise declared in your community?
