He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. Isaiah 40:22 (NIV)
The living God is not a projection of human experience or religious enterprise. He does not arise out of the creation. He sits above all that is created because He is the Creator.
God is awesome—He is sovereign over all other gods, He is ruler over the spiritual world, and He is King of kings and Lord of lords. You were made by Him and for Him, and to resist Him is utterly futile. To Him, we are like grasshoppers.
There are billions of people that inhabit planet earth, but to the eternal and infinite God, the nations are like a drop in the bucket, or like dust on the scales (40:15).
The earth itself is a tiny speck in God’s universe, and compared with Him, it is very small. “Michael Jordan was awesome because he could dunk a basketball,” Stuart Briscoe used to say, “God can dunk the world—that really is awesome.”
God is also eternal—a thousand years are like a day to Him. That’s like saying the entire history of the United States is a morning to Him. What is 200 years to an eternal God? Hardly a blip on the screen. “No sooner are they planted…than he blows on them and they wither” (40:24).
When you stand with Him and know what eternity is, you will see that the whole of human history goes by in the blink of an eye. Our whole lives are like a nanosecond.
When you come to know this awesome and eternal God, you will never be bored. When you have been with Him for a thousand years, your fascination and adoration will only have begun.
What is one distortion of God that you have been holding on to that could be reshaped by filling your mind with His transcendence?
