Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned said to the man of God, “If the LORD himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” But he said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.” – 2 Kings 7:2
There is a big difference between the king and his captain. The king did not believe, but he was open to investigating. “Go and see” (7:14). But the captain’s mind and heart were closed. He refused to believe. “If the LORD himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” (7:2).
Picture this man facing a crowd of starving people who have heard that there is food outside. As the gates open, the crowd surges forward. The captain falls backward and is trampled to death. Elisha had said, “You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it” (7:2). Then we read, “He died, as the man of God had said” (7:17).
The lepers’ words “this day is a day of good news” are at the heart of this story (7:9), which points us to the good news of Jesus Christ. When He was born, an angel said, “Behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born… a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11). The word gospel means “good news.”
God opened the windows of heaven and sent His Son into the world. Christ has defeated the enemy of our souls, and He freely offers an abundant and eternal life to all who will come and receive it from Him.
