“The LORD our God made a covenant with us…” Deuteronomy 5:2
What hope did the people have of getting into the Promised Land? And what hope is there for us? Where can we find the power for a fresh start?
In Deuteronomy 5, we see something wonderfully strange: “Moses summoned all Israel and said to them… ‘The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb’” (5:1-2). Now the people were probably thinking, “Moses, don’t you remember? Most of us weren’t even born, and the rest of us were just little children!”
Moses would have said, “I know. But I’m telling you, God made a covenant with us!” Then Moses declared this amazing truth: “Not with our fathers did the LORD make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today” (5:3).
What is true for these people is also true for us! God made a covenant of grace before we were born and it is for us. The covenant is that He will redeem sinners like us for Himself through His Son. This covenant is not written on tablets of stone; it is sealed in the blood of Jesus Christ.
There was a man hanging on a cross and He is the Son of God. His body was torn. His blood was poured out. And He said, “My body is given for you. A new covenant is sealed in my blood, which is poured out for the forgiveness of your sins.” The power for a fresh start is found in the covenant God has made with us.
Do you see how God has provided a fresh start for you, before you were born, in the new covenant of His Son?
